Our 3RZ plug and play kit is the easiest way to put a modern standalone ECU into a 1998 to 2004 Toyota Hilux. There's no cutting or re-pinning the factory loom. The kit plugs in where the factory ECU and air flow meter used to be, and you're ready to start up on the supplied base file.
We filmed the whole install, from unboxing to first start-up, so you can see exactly what's involved before you order.
Check fitment first
- Australian delivered Toyota Hilux, 1998 to 2004
- Manual transmission only
- Wasted spark coil pack setup only (not distributor)
- Not suitable for imports
If you're not sure what you've got, get in touch before you order.
What's in the kit
- Air flow meter delete harness, with an air temperature sensor and a plug for an optional boost solenoid
- Patch harness that plugs into the factory ECU plugs, with a 4-pin DTM plug for the wideband controller
- Full kits also include the ECU, boost solenoid and wideband controller kit
- Available with either a Haltech or a Link ECU, with the start-up file emailed to you
Install step-by-step
1. Unbox and check the kit.
Lay everything out and check you've got all the parts for the kit option you ordered.
2. Remove the glovebox.
The factory ECU sits behind the glovebox. Take the glovebox out to get clear access.
3. Unplug and remove the factory ECU.
Unplug the three factory ECU plugs and remove the ECU. It isn't used again with the kit.
4. Fit the patch harness and new ECU.
Plug the patch harness into the factory ECU plugs, then connect the new ECU to the patch harness.
5. Run the wideband and vacuum line through the firewall.
Feed the wideband sensor lead and the ECU vacuum line through the firewall into the engine bay.
6. Fit the air flow meter delete harness.
In the engine bay, unplug the factory air flow meter and plug in the delete harness. Fit the air temperature sensor into the intake pipe immediately in front of the throttle body.
7. Connect the vacuum line and wideband sensor.
Connect the vacuum line to a port on the intake manifold, and fit the wideband sensor into the bung on the turbo down pipe. If you're running the optional boost solenoid, plug it into the connector on the delete harness.
8. Load the start-up file and fire it up.
Load the supplied start-up file into the ECU, turn the key and start the engine.
Worth knowing before you start
- Air temp sensor position matters. It must go in the intake pipe right in front of the throttle body. Anywhere else and the ECU reads the wrong air temperature, and your tune will be wrong with it.
- Wideband bung. If your down pipe hasn't got a wideband bung, have one welded in before you start.
- The start-up file is not a tune. It's a base for starting and testing only, and it suits standard injectors. Get the car tuned properly before you drive it.
- Not for road use. This kit does not meet emissions standards.
Get the kit, or let us tune it
The 3RZ Plug and Play Harness Kit is available as a loom only or as a full kit with ECU, boost solenoid and wideband. Once it's fitted, we can tune it on the dyno at our Clontarf workshop. Get in touch to book it in.
